Richelle Boone
PhD Candidate
Richelle joined the INSCONS project as a PhD candidate in September 2019. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physics & Astronomy from Utrecht University in 2015 (cum laude), and a Master of Science in History & Philosophy of Science from the same university in 2018 (cum laude). Richelle is interested in science organisation, interdisciplinarity and the intersections between science, politics and society. Next to her work for the INSCONS project, she is currently a board member of the youth scientific think tank of a Dutch political party. In 2019 she has been a trainee in the Scientific Foresight Unit (STOA) of the European Parliamentary Research Service in Brussels. Both during her Bachelor's and her Master's Richelle has been active in Utrecht University's interdisciplinary honours education as a student and an assistant.

Within the INSCONS project, Richelle explores the organisational and social dynamics in the ITER case study. She is especially interested in the interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaborations within the consortium, and in the connection between the quality of these collaborations and organisational structures. Richelle is supervised by Professor Simcha Jong, Professor of Science Based Business and PI of the INSCONS project, and co-supervised by Professor Sarah de Rijcke, Professor in Science, Technology & Innovation Studies and Scientific Director at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) in Leiden.
Kaela joined the INSCONS project as a PhD candidate in February 2020. Originally from Australia, Kaela has a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental and Marine Science from the University of Western Australia and an Erasmus Mundus Master of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (MESPOM). Before moving to the Netherlands, Kaela worked for two years at the international sustainability research platform Future Earth.

International scientific consortia are complex organisations whose research underpins the science-based solutions that society needs to achieve global sustainability. Kaela wants to better understand how the structure and coordination of these organisations help or hinder their ability to achieve their objectives. Kaela is excited about the potential of the INSCONS project to inform and shape international collaborations in science in the future. Within the INSCONS project, Kaela focuses on the TLS case study and is supervised by Professor Simcha Jong, at the Science-Based Business group, and Professor Marja Spierenburg at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology.

Anna-Lena Rüland
PhD Candidate

Anna-Lena joined the INSCONS project as a PhD candidate in January 2021. She holds a BA in Politics, Administration and Organisation from the University of Potsdam (first-class honours), and a MA in International Relations from the Free University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Potsdam (first-class honours). Prior to joining INSCONS, Anna-Lena worked as a Programme Manager at the Free University of Berlin and gained practical experience at the intersection of politics and science at The World Academy of Sciences, a UNESCO programme.

In the INSCONS project Anna-Lena studies the 'procedural' aspects of the formation and development of International Scientific Consortia in their broader cultural-political environment. She is particularly interested in the question of under what conditions some stakeholder groups, for example those based in poorer parts of the world, may end up at the periphery of such consortia and is being supervised by Professor Simcha Jong, Professor of Science Based Business and PI of the INSCONS project, as well as Professor Joachim Koops, Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs.
